Flooding is this shrink term for a rush of emotion that occurs when a person re-lives/remembers some deeply hidden event. Usually, it is the shrink that ferrets out some hidden trauma and who forces a person to recognize the trauma and re-live it. The concept is that forcing/aiding someone in reliving some hidden trauma (against their will and when they are unable to do so on their own), is somehow THERAPEUTIC.

What exactly does this have to do with cops and robbers?

At the heart of Law and Order: Criminal Intent (which airs on Sundays) is the concept of flooding, the entire show revolves around the main cop ferreting out the criminal's hidden trauma (because the show operates on the premise that hidden/suppressed trauma is the underlying motive for all crime).

My main question is "Where the hell did this idea come from?" The concept that hidden/suppressed trauma is the underlying motive to all crime can't have sheat to do with the real NYPD. I just can't imagine there being anyone on the NY fahking PD that would have the slightest fahking idea of what flooding is or know anything about psychology (or how to actually fahking investigate fahking crime, its seems to me that the NYPD only knows how to arrest people and force them to confess to crimes they didn't commit).

Personally, I find the whole idea of flooding a violent assault. In my view, to force someone to re-live some trauma that they are unable to consciously face is the equivalent of an assault. More or less as a result of all of this, I find this particular Law and Order show rather interesting; although I do not find it entertaining, nor do I find the characters attractive.

Maybe I'm alone, but I find the main cop's maneuvering in ferreting out someone's hidden trauma to be totally repulsive, it does not make the main character appealing to me. And in almost every one of these Law and Order's there is the obligatory break down scene in which the criminal (faced with his/her hidden trauma) breaks down in a FLOOD of emotion. It is just all so totally repulsive.

AND ON THE SUBJECT OF SUPPRESSED EMOTIONS

There is so much about psychology that is total sheat, I guess I make the mistake some times of just dismissing the whole fahking profession out of hand. I mean psychology was essentially invented by drug addicts and some truly fahked up individuals (according to rumor, there is still sheat about Freud that is being intentionally hidden from the public).

After I had been a raw foodists for some time (and I suppose when I had the energy to face something that I was suppressing), I had this memory of something come over me, and it more or less knocked me over. I was immediately conscious not only of the event that I had been suppressing, but I was also conscious of how the fact that I did not want to face this event had impacted my life (this more or less put a cap on my self-destructive behavior, I can still be very self-destructive, but I definitely no longer wallow in self-destructiveness).

More or less around this same time period, I had another memory reach my consciousness which I seem to still be unable to accept. I can remember remembering the event, I can remember thinking how strange it was that I could have forgotten/suppressed such a thing, but I don't really remember all of the details about what happened as I did on the day that I remembered it. It is very strange.

AND FINALLY

I am very conscious of the fact that I have not fully experienced the fact that my grandfather is dead.

For a very brief moment at the end of my grandfather's funeral, when someone went to pull down the lid on his coffin, I actually experienced my grandfather being dead. I stiffened and wondered to myself how my grandfather would be able to breath with the lid on the coffin down.
