It is really amazing how easy some temps have it. Some temps fly into Manhattan from Wisconsin and land lucrative $25.00/hr long-term 2nd shift word processing center jobs (with plenty of OT) without ever having worked in a word processing center before (some manage this without ever having temped before). On the other hand, some temps have to beg agency after agency for work and are lucky to get one $16.00/hr job.
I considered myself lucky, a few years ago, because I had a first shift, second shift and weekend job. Once I worked this 1st, 2rd and weekend schema for a while, I wanted to see how much money I could make if I worked this all year. At the end of the year, I ended up with a lot of money (and a huge tax liability), but not as much money as some brain dead Actress Temp probably made polishing her nails in some investment bank's wp center.
When you have a long term job that has plenty of OT available, you can make much more money than you can make running from one temp job with one agency 1st shift to another temp job through a different agency on second shift. Also, if you are working for more than one agency, you will owe a huge amount of tax at the end of the year unless you plan ahead.
Once, while walking to a temp assignment in the morning, I ran into a friend of mine. It turned out that my friend was LEAVING her third shift job and heading to her First shift job.
